Author Alan Beckett talks about his journey and experience of capturing his life story with the help of LifeBook Memoirs. Here are some excerpts from an interview with Alan:

Did you consider writing your memoir before completing your LifeBook?
I thought many times over the years about writing my memoir, but I always thought it would be an impossible task.

You found LifeBook Memoirs with the help of your grandson Alex, after telling him stories of your past. Can you tell us more about how it came about?
It came completely out of the blue. I was just finishing a business meeting with Alex, who was taking over the family business, when I mentioned something about the past. He said to me, “Why don’t you put these things you tell us into print, Grandad?” Immediately, I said, “Okay, find me someone.” So, he had a look at his phone and came up with the number for LifeBook Memoirs.

Once he left, I pondered for a few minutes and then dialled the number, and the rest is history. I sealed the deal the very next morning, with Roy Moëd, the founder of LifeBook Memoirs, and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. My whole life story was about to be put into print.

Who did you share your copies with?
My grandchildren and their wives, Emma and Abbie. I also presented my great-grandson, Henry, with his own copy of my book when he was just two days old, with a suitable inscription for him to read when he is older.

What was your favourite part of the whole experience?
My favourite part of the whole experience was that it was all done without me having to leave my armchair! Beforehand, I hadn’t a clue how it would work out, but I have said many times since that what was achieved was really quite remarkable.

What are your three favourite memories that feature in your memoirs?
Meeting my wife, Beryl, in 1950 and our married life together, and to be young in the fabulous fifties and sixties, with the world at our feet. Witnessing the changes not only at home but the world over and comparing them to today, it really was a time of innocence. We were ambitious, and we knew that if we worked hard, we could realise those ambitions. I remember clearly the feeling I had when I got the first cheque after starting my own business. In later years, my involvement with the Morriston Orpheus Choir, when my organisational skills were tested to the limit, was a truly wonderful period in my life.
